HOw it all Began

In 2015, after the adoption of her daughter, our founder, Caitlin Sund took short term mission trips to China to serve as an occupational therapist in orphanages. Deciding to do more for local foster and adoptive communities, knowing their struggles first hand, she started the York County Foster Closet, where foster and adoptive families can get the necessities they need for free.

The York County Foster Closet provides items such as baby equipment, car seats, diapers, furniture, clothing and gift cards.

Then What Happened?

In 2019 it became apparent that the needs of our local foster and adoptive families go beyond meeting physical and tangible needs. The families are feeling isolated and are seeking community. That is when DEFEND THE FATHERLESS was established. The York County Foster Closet became a ministry of Defend the Fatherless and and the reach grew in aims of meeting not only the physical but also the spiritual, emotional, financial and educational needs of the families they serve.

Since 2015 Defend the Fatherless has

  • Served over 1,000 children in various capacities

  • Established a Frozen Meal Program

  • Established a No-Cost Tutoring Program

  • Held Connection Events

  • Held Respite Events

  • Provided Back to School Supplies

  • Provided Summer Fun Baskets

  • Partnered with DSS to provide Christmas to over 130 York County Foster children

  • Provided 3 adoption grants

  • Continued to operate The York County Foster Closet
